Today, the City of Linden proudly recognizes Portugal’s National Day, or as it is known by the nation’s locals: Dia de Camões, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas (“Day of Camões, Portugal, and the Portuguese Communities”).
June 10th commemorates the emblematic Portuguese author Luís de Camões, writer of the national epic poem published in 1572, Os Lusíadas. Dedicated to the 16th-century King Sebastian, Os Lusíadas lionized Portugal’s era of world exploration through its description of the seafaring trade route found to provide passage to India by navigator Vasco da Gama. Camões’ writing made him into such an indelible symbol of national pride, even the Portuguese language itself is sometimes referred to by its nickname: “The Language of Camões.”
Along with Camões poem, the pride of Portuguese exploration is also forever encapsulated in the country’s red and green flag. At the intersection of the two colors lies the Portuguese coat of arms sitting on the background of a spherical astrolabe, a tool utilized by early explorers such as Vasco da Gama to navigate their maritime journeys.
Dear Parents & Guardians of Proud LHS 2020 Graduates,
In light of the Covid-19 Pandemic it is important that our community comes together to celebrate your Graduate and the Class of 2020. I personally feel each and everyone of them has been robbed of the best months of their senior year and it is important to you and your child that they be recognized for the hard work that they have put in since they first entered school all those years ago. With that in mind the Mayor’s Youth Commission and myself decided that on June 17th, 2020 we would celebrate our Senior Class; therefore, we are hosting an un-traditional graduation, which we are calling a “Post-Graduation Ceremony”, at Linden Airport.
The graduation ceremony will start at 11am. All cars will assemble in the aircraft parking lot at Linden’s Airport at 10am. To accommodate the number of graduates we are expecting, there will be only one vehicle allowed per graduate and their family. The graduate should be seated on the passenger side of the vehicle (front or back seat), as they will be exiting the vehicle to be recognized and to have their picture taken. Graduates should be dressed in their caps and gowns. To make this more festive we would love to see your vehicles decorated in celebration of the Class of 2020. Please write the graduates name across the top of your windshield or on a piece of paper large enough so we can read it. We also request that you have the graduates name on an index card or a slip of paper for the Master of Ceremonies to announce the graduate’s name. Please note everyone MUST remain in their vehicles at all times during the ceremony, and only the graduate will exit the vehicle when it is their turn. Masks and gloves are optionalfor graduates. Should for some reason Mother Nature not cooperate on the 17th, the rain date for the ceremony will be June 18th.
Mother’s Day 2020 celebrations are different because of COVID. To show Mom how much she means to all of us on Mother’s Day Council President Michele Yamakaitis, my wife Danie and I invited our residents to participate in this year’s City of Linden Virtual Mother’s Day Celebration. Participants submitted a Mother’s Day Greeting to us for the City’s Virtual Mother’s Day Segment. On Mother’s Day, submitted videos will run on Linden TV, posted to social media and available to watch here. Happy Mother’s Day! – Mayor Derek Armstead
School Two celebrated Arbor Day on April 30, 2021 with a ceremony which also honored long time crossing guards Mike and Maggie Smith. One Linden tree was planted on West 17th Street in the spring of 2020, but the ceremony was postponed due to the global pandemic. Click here to see the 2021 Arbor Day Gallery.
Arbor Day 2019
The City of Linden and Linden Shade Tree Commission would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in our annual “Arbor Day” celebration held on May 1, 2019 at School #8 in Linden. Arbor Day (or Arbour; from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees.
In addition to Arbor Day it is also International Landscape Architecture Month, and the Anniversary of the birth of the Father of Landscape Architecture, Fredrick Law Olmsted. Olmsted designed such famous parks as Central Park and Prospect Park in NYC and the Essex County Park System (1st ever in the United States). His successor firm designed the Union County Park System, including Wheeler Park in Linden! Click here to view the Arbor Day 2019 Celebration Photo Gallery.
Arbor Day 2018
On April 27, 2018 five Linden trees were planted at School No. 1. Mrs. Padovano’s second grade class mulched and watered the new trees, shared information about trees and Arbor Day, and sang “Trees Trees Trees.” Click here to view the Arbor Day 2018 Celebration Photo Gallery.
