Winter Weather Warning In Effect

Inclement weather is predicted for the afternoon of Wednesday, December 16, into the afternoon of Thursday, December 17. Snow is expected to accumulate between 12-17 inches.

  • Please avoid driving if possible and park all vehicles in driveways.
  • Obey all “no parking” signs as instructed.
  • Do not park on corners and do not double park vehicles.
  • Do not park on any emergency streets, or your car will be towed!
  • When cleaning your driveway – DO NOT SHOVEL SNOW INTO THE ROADWAYS.
  • Garbage pickup for Thursday, December 17th is suspended and will instead be picked up on Friday, December 18th.

Adhering to these measures will will keep roads clear and passable for emergency vehicles. Please be advised that vehicles left on the road may be towed.

Beware of Utility Scams!

Utility scams are on the rise. Sometimes impostors contact PSE&G customers demanding immediate payment and threatening service shut off. Don’t be a victim…be prepared.

Signs of Potential Scam Activity

  • Threat to disconnect: Scammers may aggressively tell the customer their utility bill is past due and service will be disconnected if a payment is not made – usually within an hour.
  • Request for immediate payment: Scammers may instruct the customer to use cash or purchase a prepaid card, a gift card or even Bitcoin, and then to call back to make a phone payment to the utility company, or to receive instructions for an in-person meeting, supposedly at a utility customer center. Often, after the customer makes the first payment, the scammer will call back and request the payment be resubmitted due to an error with the amount. The scammer refers to a new amount and claims that the original payment will be refunded. Sometimes they will call a third time to say the payment did not go through and to resubmit again.
  • In person-demands: Scammers may arrive at a home or business, flash a fake ID and/or claim to be a utility collection representative. The impostors may wear “uniforms” or affix false company signs to their vehicles. The scammers generally ask for personal information, something authentic utility representatives do not do, or offer bogus discounts.
  • Request for card information: If a customer calls back with the requested information, the caller asks the customer for the prepaid card’s number or gift card PIN, which grants the scammer instant access to the card’s funds, and the victim’s money is gone.
  • Priority meter installs: Recent phone scams reported to PSE&G include demands for payment for past-due bills, discounts for good payment history or requiring a deposit for a priority meter installation. PSE&G does not require a deposit for meter installations. Often scammers will threaten to disconnect electric service if payment is not made immediately. These scammers often demand payment through a pre-paid card (e.g. Green Dot Money Pak, Vanilla Reload Card) or Bitcoin. If the victim takes the bait, the scammer provides a telephone number where a fake representative requests additional information that completes the fraudulent transaction.

New Jersey residents can respond to the 2020 Census to ensure the state gets its fair share of federal funding. The Census provides valuable data for businesses, including population trends, growth projections and demographic information. Spread the word! Deadline to respond to the Census is September 30.

Applications Open for the Small Landlord Emergency Grant (SLEG) Program – Tomorrow

This program will reimburse small residential rental property owners for lost rent revenue due to COVID-19 between April and July 2020. Although applications are not first come, first served and are open for a week, we urge you to prepare your documents and make sure you’re ready to apply. It is more important to have your application be correct and accurate than it is to submit early.

Storm Isaias Aftermath Update

I know that some residents are concerned about branches and limbs pick-up. We are asking for your continued patience because Storm Isaias adversely affected our entire City. Our Department of Public Works has been busy working around the clock along with PSE&G with limited man-power due to COVID-19.

Over 13,800 people lost power in Linden, more than Hurricane Sandy. Phase 1 of the clean-up was taking care of the trees that affected the power lines, so that power could be restore to our residents and businesses. Phase 2 was to remove additional trees that are no longer stable, to avoid any potential injuries to citizens, homes and vehicles. Phase 3 will be the continued clean-up of branches and limbs and will be continued to be picked up during grass clipping days.

We are still currently in Phase 2 and Phase 3. We are asking for patience and understanding. Our DPW men and women are working hard and just need time to get the job done.

Union County COVID-19 Test Sites

Union County residents can now walk to our free COVID-19 test sites, provided by the Union County COVID-19 Mobile Test Unit. The Mobile Test Unit is visiting local communities to offer free COVID-19 tests to the public, by appointment. All tests are conducted on a walk-up basis; no car is needed.

  • Any Union County resident can make an appointment at any Mobile Test Unit location.
  • Union County residents who need assistance by phone can call the Mobile Test Unit at 908-518-4307.
  • The Union County COVID-19 Mobile Test Unit has conducted more than 2,000 tests to date and is staffed by health professionals with the Union County Division of Health.
  • Residents can attend any of the following upcoming Walk-up Sites. Click each site to make an appointment online.

Interfaith Action Movement (I AM) Creating Decennial Census Awareness for 20,000 People

Aiming to reduce under-counts of communities of color and other hard to reach communities

Leaders from faith and community-based organizations, higher education institutions, law enforcement, state, and local government officials, and business leaders have come together to form New Jersey’s Interfaith Action Movement (I AM).

This diverse, action-oriented coalition is coordinating a state-wide strategy to peak awareness of the U.S. Census specifically focused on hard to count (HTC) populations within the state of New Jersey. The I AM efforts centerpiece is a series of Census Family Reunion Sundays slated for September 6, 13, 20 and 27, in advance of the new Census deadline of September 30, 2020.

I AM is led by Rev. Dr. Derrick Green, Senior Advisor for Diversity, Faith, Urban and Regional Growth for New Jersey Governor Phil D. Murphy.
