Extreme Heat Warning & Air Quality Report

June 24, 2025

Heat/Air Quality Notice #1

Dear Residents,

We are under an Extreme Heat Warning and Air Quality Alert. Currently, the National Weather Service has heat indices in the mid-nineties and potential for one hundred on Tuesday.

Dangerous heat possible today. High temperatures in the low 90s combined with high humidity will lead to potentially dangerous heat indices. Sensitive individuals, including the very young, elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses, should avoid strenuous activities.

Code Orange Air Quality Alert: The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a code orange air quality alert Monday for Linden. A code orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. These groups include children, people diagnosed with asthma, heart conditions or other lung conditions, and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.

Looking ahead: The heat warning is expected to be lifted by 8:00pm on Wednesday night. Slightly lower temperatures and humidity are expected for Saturday and Sunday.

Impacts may be exacerbated by the duration of the heat as we get into next week and due to limited overnight relief with lows generally remaining in the mid-70s.

Please keep yourself cool and hydrated and limit outdoor activities when possible. Young children and infants, pregnant women, as well as older adults and those with chronic medical conditions, are at higher risk of heat related illness. Please take extra precautions and review the websites below to learn how to recognize heat related illnesses.

Do not leave children or pets alone in a car for even a minute. A vehicle heats up quickly, and a child’s body temperature rises faster than an adult’s. Animals are at risk for brain damage or heatstroke in just 15 minutes and leaving a pet in a car unattended is illegal in New Jersey. We remind you to check the back seat every time you leave the vehicle. If you see a child or pet left unattended in a vehicle, dial 911 immediately.

Please review the following websites for heat safety tips:

The Linden Police are available 24/7 and can be reached at 908-474-8500. For emergencies always dial 911. Please take a moment to check in on your neighbors, especially those that are older or with disabilities. We will update when/if necessary.

Stay safe,

Mayor Derek Armstead
