The Legends of Linden Concert

Fire in Linden NJ Successfully Extinguished

Linden’s Fire Department successfully extinguished a horrific fire this morning, which took place on Gesner Street earlier this morning. The fire is out at this time. Specific information as to circumstances that led to the fire and other details are not currently available due to an ongoing investigation. The home has been secured, and is currently listed as an unsafe structure not fit for occupancy until properly remediated, which based on the damage is likely to be extensive.

“What happened this morning is just absolutely dreadful,” said Mayor Derek Armstead. “Thankfully, due to the fast response time provided by our Fire Department, I am pleased to report that this fire claimed no lives.” 

While fighting the fire, one of Linden’s bravest almost fell through the second floor of the structure. An initial visual inspection of the interior obtained anonymously indicates that certain critical supporting physical structures were removed, including the staircase to the second floor and possibly supporting beams. “We are aware that the home in question had electrical work and construction work for which there are no permits on file,” said Mayor Armstead. 

This is deeply concerning, as this illegal work may very well prove to be responsible for creating this disaster in which a firefighter could have been severely injured, or even lost his or her life.” said Mayor Armstead. “While we will get to the bottom of this once the Fire Department has completed their investigation, the most important thing here is to not make the same mistake twice. Let me make myself perfectly clear; the City of Linden will not tolerate the violation of any construction, fire, zoning or planning board regulations, which are designed to preserve and protect property and lives,” said Mayor Armstead.

2023 Linden Tigers – Summer Baseball Camp

Mayor Derek Armstead, the City of Linden, and the Department of Parks & Recreation are pleased to offer the 2023 Linden Tigers – Summer Baseball Camp.

  • Who: For boys ages 5 through 14.
  • What: Baseball Camp for boys, with instructors Brandon Czajikowski (LHS Varsity Baseball Head Coach), Frank Hasenauer (LHS Varsity Baseball Assistant Coach) and the Linden High School Varsity Baseball Players.
  • Where: Memorial Field (next to the P.A.L. Fields), which is located at 46 Lower Road.
  • When: 8:30am until 1pm, from July 24 through July 26.
    • Rain date: Thursday, July 27.

Fix Health Benefits Plans for Municipal and School District Employees – Join Mayor Derek Armstead

The Issue

The cost of healthcare under New Jersey’s State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) and School Employees’ Health Benefits Program (SEHBP) has reached a crisis point. Year after year, municipalities and school districts are facing double-digit premium increases that are consuming local budgets and placing an enormous burden on taxpayers.

These escalating costs are forcing local governments and school districts to divert funding away from essential services, public safety, infrastructure, educational programs, and student support services. At the same time, rising healthcare expenses contribute directly to higher property taxes for residents.

Mayor Derek Armstead is calling on New Jersey lawmakers to enact comprehensive reforms to stabilize and strengthen these state-run health benefit plans before the financial situation becomes unsustainable.

Recent reports from the State Treasurer have warned that both the SHBP and SEHBP face significant long-term financial challenges. Without meaningful reform, costs will continue to rise at an alarming rate, threatening the stability of these programs and the communities that depend on them.

Why This Matters

Municipal workers, teachers, police officers, firefighters, educational support professionals, and other public servants rely on these plans for quality healthcare coverage. They deserve affordable, sustainable benefits that protect their health and financial security.

Likewise, taxpayers deserve responsible stewardship of public funds. Every dollar spent on unchecked healthcare cost increases is a dollar that cannot be invested in classrooms, public safety, road improvements, recreation programs, and other critical community services.

We Call on State Leaders To:

  • Conduct a comprehensive review and reform of the SHBP and SEHBP.
  • Increase transparency and accountability in healthcare plan management and spending.
  • Work collaboratively with municipalities, school districts, labor organizations, and taxpayers to develop sustainable solutions.
  • Implement cost-saving measures that maintain high-quality healthcare coverage for employees and their families.
  • Create long-term financial safeguards that protect taxpayers while ensuring the viability of these plans.

Take Action

New Jersey’s municipal governments, school districts, employees, and taxpayers cannot continue to absorb unsustainable healthcare cost increases. The time for action is now. Message to the Community from Linden Police Chief Hart

Over the past several days our community has been ravaged by three separate shooting incidents. While these recent incidents have been isolated to one or two areas of our city, this violent crime is a problem for all of us. There have been 14 confirmed shooting incidents to date this year, and while that is down from the highs that we saw just a few years ago, it is still unacceptable in every possible sense.

I want to assure the members of our community that this is our number one priority; nothing that we do is more essential than protecting our community from violent crime. Detectives have been working around the clock to identify those responsible for this senseless violence, and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners at all levels to identify any potential links to criminal activity across the county and state.

People have a right to feel safe and secure in their homes and in their neighborhoods. Recent events have, understandably, had a devastating impact on our sense of security, and we recognize that in addition to stopping these crimes we also have an obligation to restore the feelings of safety that our residents deserve.

In response to these events we have deployed additional personnel, and residents can expect to see saturation patrols in designated areas. In addition, we have deployed a street crimes interdiction unit specifically focused on deterring this kind of violent crime. They will be on our streets every single day for as long as they are needed to reverse these trends.

Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that results in an indictment and conviction in these shootings. Tips can be submitted anonymously by phone 24-hours a day at 908-654-TIPS (8477) or online.

Despite these steps, and whatever other steps we may take, we cannot solve this problem alone. I urge each and every member of our community to come forward and cooperate with our investigations; if you see something, say something. If something looks off, say something. If you know information about criminal activity, say something. Through partnership, we can stop this trend and restore the community that we want and deserve.

Father’s Day Tournament

Mayor Derek Armstead, the City of Linden, and the Department of Parks and Recreation presented a Father-son/Parent-child basketball tournament on Father’s Day, June 18, 2023 at Wilson Park.

Fathers and guardians were partnered with sons and/or nephews and other young men (grades ranging from 5th to 8th grade) to compete for the grand prize trophy in each division.

The day’s event was filled with fun, fellowship, competitiveness, and lots of loving and expressive moments, as depicted in the photos below. Thank you to all of the families and community residents that participated and supported our first annual Father-son/Parent child basketball tournament. The event was a huge success, and families are already looking forward to next year’s Father’s Day competition.
