Two Food Distribution Events on Saturday, December 19th

The County of Union is hosting two emergency holiday food distributions this Saturday, December 19th; one drive-thru and one walk-up.

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Village Super Market of Springfield Township, New Jersey, CMC Food LLC, Breadsmith and Gargiulo Produce are providing drive through and walk-up food distribution events to all Union County residents affected by COVID-19 on Saturday, December 19th. Drive-Thru Event

When – December 19th, 9am.

Where – Kean University – 1000 Morris Avenue, Union NJ

Event Details

  • First 3,000 vehicles will receive a special holiday food box, produce, and meat with all the trimmings on a first come first served basis.
  • One food distribution per vehicle, while supplies last
  • Please make sure to clear out the vehicle’s trunk prior to arrival to make room for food bags.
  • Refrigerate any perishable items shortly after distribution.
  • Bring one (1) proof of NJ residency, such as a utility bill, driver’s license, ID card, etc.
  • Event will take place rain or shine.

Walk-Up Event

When – December 19th, 1:30pm.

Event Details

  • First 500 persons will receive a special holiday food box, produce, and meat with all the trimmings on a first come first served basis.
  • One food distribution per vehicle, while supplies last
  • Bring a cart for the walk-up.
  • Bring one (1) proof of NJ residency, such as a utility bill, driver’s license, ID card, etc.
  • Event will take place rain or shine.
  • Refrigerate any perishable items shortly after distribution.

Union County Program Cancellations Due to Weather

The County of Union has cancelled and adjusted the following programs and services due to the impending winter storm.

  • The COVID-19 Drive-Thru Testing Center at Kean University will be closed on Thursday, December 17th. All appointments for that day will be held on Friday, December 18th, and the drive-thru test center will be open that day from 8am until 5:30pm. 
  • The Union County COVID-19 Mobile Testing Event scheduled for December 17th in Berkeley Heights from 2pm until 5pm is cancelled and will be rescheduled to a later date.
  • All Union County Paratransit service will not run on Thursday, December 17th. Paratransit service, including the Route 22 shuttle, will run until 6pm. on Wednesday, December 16th and resume Friday, December 18th.
  • The Meals on Wheels program will not deliver meals on Thursday, December 17th. Meal delivery will be doubled on Wednesday, December 16th.

Individuals who are in need of shelter during or just prior to the storm can call the Division of Social Services 908-965-2700 and transportation will be arranged as needed.

The Freeholders urge you to take caution throughout the storm and check on loved ones. For any problems on County roads, please call the County Police at 908-654-9800.

Important Weather Advisory

Winter Weather Warning In Effect

Inclement weather is predicted for the afternoon of Wednesday, December 16, into the afternoon of Thursday, December 17. Snow is expected to accumulate between 12-17 inches.

  • Please avoid driving if possible and park all vehicles in driveways.
  • Obey all “no parking” signs as instructed.
  • Do not park on corners and do not double park vehicles.
  • Do not park on any emergency streets, or your car will be towed!
  • When cleaning your driveway – DO NOT SHOVEL SNOW INTO THE ROADWAYS.
  • Garbage pickup for Thursday, December 17th is suspended and will instead be picked up on Friday, December 18th.

Adhering to these measures will will keep roads clear and passable for emergency vehicles. Please be advised that vehicles left on the road may be towed.

New Online Municipal Case Resolution – No Court Appearance Required!

Linden Municipal Court now offers online tickets review to dispute certain moving violations through the online Municipal Case Resolution System. By having a moving violation reviewed online, it is not necessary to make any court appearance. Simply visit click here and enter your ticket information to see if your offense is eligible, and select the option for Case Dispute. Newark Man Arrested Following Attempted Car Burglary

William Fales, 29, of Newark, was arrested and is facing charges related to a vehicle burglary.

Just before 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 Officers responded to the 400 block of Ainsworth St after a resident reported that a man was pulling on car door handles. Officers located Fales at the corner of W. Elm & Brook St, and a subsequent investigation identified him as the suspect.

At the time of his arrest, Fales was found to be in possession of several items that were stolen from a separate vehicle burglary on December 3, 2020.

Fales was arrested and is charged with third-degree burglary and possession of stolen property, a Disorderly Persons offense. He was remanded to the Union County Jail pending an appearance in Superior Court.

These criminal charges are mere accusations. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
