Public Health Advisory – Rabies
On March 3, 2026, a racoon was killed by a dog in the area of Fay Avenue & East Elizabeth Avenue, and that racoon subsequently tested positive for rabies. This is the second racoon to test positive this year; another case was reported in January in the area of East Linden Avenue between South Park Avenue & Ashton Avenue.
This information is being shared out of an abundance of caution; there have been no confirmed cases of transmission to humans or pets. Proper precautions can effectively minimize the dangers associated with rabies, including:
- Vaccinate Pets: Keep pet rabies vaccines up to date.
- Avoid Wildlife: Do not approach, feed, or touch wildlife, especially those acting strangely (lethargic, aggressive, or unusually friendly).
- Secure Trash: Wildlife, especially raccoons, are attracted to unsecured garbage cans, pet food, and fallen fruit.
- If Bitten/Scratched: Wash wounds immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention right away.
- Report Sick Animals: Report any sightings of sick, acting strange, or aggressive animals to the Linden Board of Health at 908- 474-8409. During an emergency or during non-business hours, please contact the Linden Police Department by calling 908- 474-8500 or by dialing 9-1-1.
